A wheelchair-bound mum today said she is scared to leave the house, as the bus driver who ran her over at a zebra crossing was banned from driving for six months.

But 41-year-old Rebecca Bruce said: “He should have been banned for life.”

Mrs Bruce was hit by the double-decker 41 bus being driven by Paulo Ferriera on March 21. She was on the zebra crossing in Hazelville Road’s junction with Hornsey Road in Horney Rise.

He was turning right from Hornsey Road, but failed to spot Mrs Bruce.

“This incident has had a big effect on me,” she told the Gazette. “I have not gone out much since. I have put on two stone in weight.

“On the occasions that I do go out, I am always on the lookout.

“I constantly feel worried and nervous.”

She added: “I have been across that zebra crossing once. It brought back some really horrible memories, and apart from that I’ve tried my hardest to avoid it.”

On Friday, 41-year-old Ferriera, of Holden Close, Hertford, admitted driving without due care and attention at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Friday. He was banned from driving for six months.

“He should have been given a permanent ban,” said Mrs Bruce. “He shouldn’t be allowed back on the roads.”

The mother-of-two told the Gazette at the time: “The bus came at me. It hit the side of my wheelchair and dragged me along for about four seconds before he realised what had happened. I just remember thinking: ‘Please look at me – I want to live.’”

Mrs Bruce, of Hornsey Rise, was hospitalised for four days with injuries to her intestines and gall bladder. Her electric wheelchair was also destroyed.

Ferriera, who was sacked by bus operator Arriva immediately after the crash, was also fined £500 and ordered to pay a £50 victim surcharge.
