A row over a Hornsey Road cafe’s desire to serve alcohol ended in an “outbreak of cordiality” this week.

The application from the Hamlet Cafe hadn’t gone down well with neighbours due to historic noise complaints directed at owner Zafer Dougan. But their opposition was dropped after learning the licence would be going to a new leaseholder who intended to transform the business.

Neighbour Steven Weaver told councillors on Tuesday he had met the new owners and had a “cordial meeting.”

“We saw the place being turned into a non-stop brawl, but as it’s going to be a proper restaurant I want to withdraw my objections,” he said.

The license was granted to Azmi Pala, who will be rebranding the Hamlet as a Turkish restaurant.

One of the conditions attached to the licence will be that Dougan will be barred from being employed in any capacity on the premises.

Licensing sub-committee chair Cllr Gary Poole said: “An outbreak of cordiality is always good.”
