Commuters were hit with severe delays this morning due to an electrical fire that caused passengers to evacuate a train at Hoxton station.

The London Overground line from Highbury and Islington to New Cross, New Cross Gate and Clapham Junction was closed while crews removed the train from the track, leaving angry passengers stuck on a backlog of trains for half an hour.

National Rail services between Highbury and Islington and Surrey Quays were also hit with severe delays and cancellations, as was the Overground line between New Cross Gate and West Croydon and Crystal Palace.

Duncan Cross, London Overground’s deputy director of operations, said: “The east London line was suspended this morning at for around 30 minutes due to a small electrical fire under a train at Hoxton.

“All passengers were safely disembarked and the train has now been removed.

“Service on the line has resumed but with delays. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused to your journey.”
