A mysterious inferno which left dozens of Holloway residents in temporary accommodation over Easter is being investigated by London Fire Brigade.

More than 70 firefighters manning 10 engines from across London tackled the blaze that lit up the night sky around Rollit Street in the early hours of Saturday – police and the London Ambulance Serivce also attended the blaze shortly after 2am.

The fire engulfed the roof of Rollit House, a block of 24 homes, with 37 people having to evacuated from the building.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 4.16am and there were no injuries suffered to those inside the building, who had all escaped before the LFB arrived at the scene.

Parts of Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road were closed on Saturday morning but were back up and running in time for Arsenal’s fixture with Liverpool at nearby Emirates Stadium at lunch time.

Station Manager Clive Priestly who was at the scene said; “Firefighters draped plastic sheeting in the flats to try and protect homes and belongings as much as possible from the water we used to tackle the flames.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown with the LFB’s fire investigation team making enquiries.
