ARSENE WENGER had suggested in his programme notes that the best possible thing for Arsenal after Saturday's debacle against Hull was another game straight away - and it proved an effective remedy.

The Gunners boss had admitted feeling 'physically sick' after Saturday's defeat, but he looked in a lot better humour after watching his charges destroy Porto.

"We got the response we wanted [after Hull] and it was the performance I expected. We didn't concede, we scored four and it could have been more but the important thing was to respond and win the game," said Wenger.

"We had never played against Hull and perhaps we thought at 1-0 it was over when it wasn't.

"We needed to respond quickly as a team, and I didn't want to give the feeling that I was punishing one player more than another after Saturday," added Wenger when asked about why he only made one change from Saturday's team after threatening more.

The win sent Arsenal to the top of Group G after the other game in Istanbul between Fenerbahce and Dynamo Kiev ended goalless.

"We want to finish top of the group and I expect to do that," said Wenger, who now takes his side to Turkey on October 21.

"We will go to Turkey and try to win the game - the group is even but we feel we can win it."

But Wenger now wants this form to continue on Saturday at Sunder-land, another crucial game with an international break to come the following week.

The Gunners are sure to face another physical battle from Roy Keane's side, but Wenger added. "Away from home we have shown a good balance defensively at places like Bolton and Blackburn and I hope we can continue that on Saturday.
