Children were given the chance to mimic their Olympic heroes at an Islington community fun day on Thursday.

Highbury Fields played host to a sports day in celebration of the Olympic torch passing through the borough.

More than 6,000 people attended the event where children were given the chance to take part in mini-versions of sports featured in the London 2012 Games.

Fencing, mini-tennis, handball, rugby and trampolining were among the activities on offer, with many youngsters trying their hand at them for the first time.

Team GB gymnast Aasha Kimpton appeared on the day, alongside performances from Islington Dance Academy, Highbury Fields School Choir and Cerritos High School Marching Band.

Visitors also got to have their photos taken with the torch used at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, as well as meeting the London 2012 mascots.

Council leader Cllr Catherine West said: “It was fantastic to see lots of children enthusiastically trying out the different sports on offer.

“We wanted to make sure that Olympic torch relay day in Islington was something that residents would remember for years to come and I think we achieved that.”
