An Islington actress will star in a stage adaptation of Tim Firth’s hit film Calendar Girls.
Jill Batty, 66, of Northchurch Road, has lived in the borough and acted with Tower Theatre Company for 38 years.
The play documents a Yorkshire branch of the Womens’ Institute who raised money for a new sofa in a cancer treatment ward by posing in a naked calendar.
Ms Batty plays the lead role of Annie, whose husband dies of leukaemia.
The Tower Theatre Company, which this year celebrates its 80th birthday, was based in Canonbury’s Tower Theatre for 50 years before relocating in 2003.
“When we found out that the company would be putting on a production of Calendar Girls, everyone was very excited. I saw the film back in 2003 and really enjoyed it”, Ms Batty explained. “There aren’t many parts for older women and in this one, obviously, there are many!”
The theatre company will be donating a portion of each night’s box office takings to Leukaemia Research.
Calendar Girls will be at the Bridewell Theatre off Fleet Street until Saturday.
