Islington Assembly Hall has become the first venue in the UK to go completely ticketless in a bid to end touting.
The Upper Street venue has teamed up with digital-ticket platform Dice and will now only sell gig tickets via its phone app.
The move aims to put an end to the infuriating reality of touts bulk-buying tickets to re-sell for enormous profit. Business manager Helen Rolle said she hoped other venues would follow their lead.
“We look around for options that gave us more control of where our tickets go,” she told the Gazette. “We wanted to make sure we were giving it to the right customers. Dice was the only one with solutions to some of the problems in the industry, such as touts.
“Half of the tickets, which we have control over, will be sold through Dice.
“Hopefully it will put pressure on promoters and other ticketing agents, so their allocations go to reputable suppliers like these.”
Hundreds of Foo Fighters fans were turned away from the band’s gig at the O2 this week because they didn’t have photo ID to match the ticket.
The band blamed touts for the tough restrictions, but some of the fans who had paid £200 on re-sale sites for the tickets were left fuming.
Tickets for the 800-capacity Assembly Hall are already being sold on Dice, which also offers gig goers the chance to get a refund on tickets for gigs they can no longer go to, providing the show is sold out.
The platform, which has a “F*** touts” policy, has worked with artists including Adele and Stormzy and won industry awards.
Once a ticket is purchased it is locked to the buyer’s account. They then just have to show the mobile ticket at the door of the venue. Tickets can also be bought without a smartphone, with a phone number used as identification.
Helen said feedback from gig goers had been good so far.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with how positive it’s been,” she added. “We are hoping it will encourage more venues to go the same way.”
