A crack team from the Islington Centre for Refugees and Migrants took on a sponsored run to raise much-needed cash for the centre this week.

Volunteers, staff and centre users ran 5k and 10k circuits in Hyde Park for the Cross Street charity, which is open just two days in every seven, but manages to cram in work with 100 people each week.

It offers asylum seekers English classes and the chance to get involved in art and writing sessions, a book group, a choir and pilates classes.

There is also a support service for those who need practical help.

The charity wants to pool enough cash to open a third day every week.

Wednesday’s Chase the Sun event in Hyde Park was organised by RunThrough, a firm that puts on mid-week races throughout the summer at parks across London.

In all, the Islington Centre hopes to raise £1,000 through taking part, of which £400 is already in the coffers.

Project worker Chris Taylor, who ran training sessions with centre users in the lead-up to the event, said: “It was a unique experience for me, running with the volunteers, fellow staff and the clients that we serve at the charity.

“It was a beautiful moment when we met each other at the finish line, having all completed the run.

“The sense of achievement for one of our clients, especially, stays with me, as it was her first run.”
