An Islington designer who makes people’s pets famous has put her unique stamp on Christmas cards to help sick children.
Rose Hill, who grew up in Essex Road and now lives just off Upper Street, has clients including Charles Saatchi, Robert Webb and Sadie Frost – while her art was used in recently released feature film Kids In Love starring Cara Delevingne.
Now, having developed a popular range of greetings cards based around animals each with their own persona, Rose has decided to donate her latest creation to a good cause.
Every penny spent on her Christmas card design, pictured, will go to Action Medical Research, a charity which funds work helping to tackle diseases and conditions affecting babies and children around the world.
“I want to change the world but I’m not a politician so the best way I can do that is by making people smile through my work”, said Rose, 31.
“The Christmas card is for a really great cause, and the best thing is that every single penny that is spent on the cards goes to charity.
“The printers donate the printing, the paper mill donates the paper and so you know exactly where your money is going.
“It all goes to little children and babies and goes into research for reducing things like premature births.”
Characters such as Barnaby Shit Zhu, Tupac Cat and Professor Cuthbert are used to add comical value to Rose’s cards as well as tugging on the heart strings of animal lovers.
Tupac Cat: A rapper living in the west side (of London) with his best mate Biggie. He rose to fame with the song “Cat Em up”
Bungle Chow Chow: An aristocrat he is married to Duchess living in a grand house often seen having tea in the Dorchester it was love at first bite... They honeymooned at the Great Barrier Reef.
Tilly: Tilly is a super sweet kitten she loves balls of string and has made friends with all of the mice in her street.
Princess: Is a glamorous yummy mummy, a socialite before having Tilly, always at the latest party and private views. Hanging out with all the celeb’s, she is happily married to Dappa Sham.
Dappa Sham: A very successful business man who plays on the stock market, currently looking to buy shares in Catbook. He is happily married to Princess.
She started off in fashion but found her forte by putting her prints on cards and now her designs are stocked by Harrods, London Zoo and The British Museum.
Rose creates her designs by taking photos of the animals and then drawing them onto a “Wacom Tablet”, a kind of digital drawing pad.
“The greetings card industry is so nice, coming from fashion, everyone wants to help each other even though you are competitors,” she said.
“I love everyone getting involved with the characters, helping to name them on Facebook and thinking up storylines and their personalities.
“To me the most important things are texture and colour and that’s what makes my cards stand out.”
Rose’s Christmas card character this year is Santa Paws, but she’s looking for ideas for his back story on her facebook page at www.facebook.com/rosehilldesigns.uk.
