Islington Council has signed up to a national campaign to help tackle high levels of poor mental health across the borough.

The Mental Health Challenge will see the council, health and community partners join forces to strengthen preventative work and promote healthy lifestyles.

The 10 councils taking part in the challenge so far nominate a “member champion” whose role is to promote mental health issues in all areas of the council’s business and in their wider community with support from national mental health organisations.

Cllr Janet Burgess, executive member for health and wellbeing, has taken on the role and said: “Islington has very high levels of poor mental health and it is important that everyone is committed to ensuring that we do preventative work, not least through encouraging people to use our leisure facilities – from libraries to parks to gyms – as well as ensuring that we have proper services in place to support people with poor mental health.”
