Islington Council will replace the 150 trees claimed by St Jude’s storm to protect it’s “tree-friendly” reputation.

Winds in excess of 70mph devastated mature trees across the borough including several protected species.

Staff from highways, parks and maintenance were drafted in to clear up the mess and the council say four teams of tree surgeons have been working “flat out” to keep roads and pavements clear by removing fallen trees.

The council has pledged to use part of its contingency fund to replace the trees. Councillor Rakhia Ismail, Islington Council’s executive member for sustainability, said: “Islington residents love our trees – they’re important for the quality of life for everyone.”
