Advocating the borough’s elderly has won Islington councillor a prestigious gong
Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council’s executive member for health and wellbeing, won the Age UK award in recognition of her work in speaking out for older people at a ceremony celebrating councillors up and down the country.
Among her achievements is establishing the council’s first ever older people’s champions, arranging a pensioners lunch for more than 100 people and flighting to provide free swimming for over 60s at all Islington council funded leisure centres.
Judges at the 2014 LGiU & CCLA C’llr Achievement Awards, which were announced in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour at Westminster City Hall on February 25, felt that Cllr Burgess had also set an excellent example to others on issues such as ending 15 minute care visits.
