Islington Labour councillors will call on the Tory government to reverse cuts to schools in the borough next week.

The issue will be raised at the full council meeting on Thursday, where the cabinet will back a motion urging the government to increase school funding.

Between 2015 and 2020 Islington is projected to have had its schools budget slashed by £6.4million.

Cllr Joe Caluori the executive member for children and families, said: “Islington’s schools have gone from strength to strength, thanks to the dedication of teachers, parents and unions.

“The government’s ideological cuts to schools’ budgets risk undermining the progress we have seen in Islington’s schools.”

Between 2014 and 2017 just under half the boroughs schools (48 per cent) have had to cut staff numbers, which has increased the pupil to staff ration in classrooms .

The National Education Union is also supporting the council, and its joint general secretary, Kevin Courtney, said: “Such chronic short-sightedness is wreaking havoc in our schools.

“This generation of children deserve much better than this bargain basement version of education which removes all support, creativity and joy out of their school experience.

“It is absolutely incumbent upon government that schools receive the funding our children need.”

The Department for Education has been approached for comment.
