ISLINGTON Labour group leader Councillor Catherine West has reiterated her calls for a serious Olympic programme to be set up in Islington in time for London 2012.

The opposition leader says Islington is lagging behind other boroughs, which have set up far reaching programmes to raise young people's health and wellbeing through Olympic activities.

Lambeth has appointed an Olympics co-ordinator, and Councillor West wants Islington Council to put money aside in this year's budget to take similar steps.

She said: "It's about time that the Liberal Democrats cottoned onto how important it is to celebrate the Olympics in Islington. Some of the unhealthiest kids in the country live in Islington and we need to be taking action to help them. That is why we should be promoting this wonderful festival of sporting achievement.

"The countdown to 2012 is really going now. 2008 is an Olympic year and it will soon be too late to take advantage of the Games.
