Two-long standing stallholders have been named Islington’s Market Traders of the Year after the judges couldn’t split them.
David Brastock, who’s been selling cards at Chapel Market for 50 years and current champion Serpil Erce, who runs Sunny Olive Tree in Whitecross Street, were presented with prizes by Su Pollard and the mayor, Cllr Dave Poyser. They will now have £150 off their rent.
David’s daughter Jo Coote said: “It’s fantastic to have won on our 50th year. It is thanks to our wonderful customers and we are so proud to have been nominated by them.”
Serpil, who also won the title in 2009, said: “I am overwhelmed and delighted to have won this for the second year in a row. We have lovely and loyal customers, who know that we will be out in Whitecross Street come rain or shine.”
Council business chief Cllr Asima Shaikh praised the pair for their “quality service”.
