Islington Mayor Cllr Kat Fletcher spoke of her “pride” in the young people of Islington yesterday following the publication of A-level results.
Schools and colleges across the borough opened their doors to let anxious youngsters collect their results yesterday, with many going on to top universities after gaining the results they needed.
“It was a privilege to meet so many young people on such a momentous and emotional day for them,” said the Mayor, who joined students at Highbury Grove and Highbury Fields as they received their grades.
“Every one of them is bursting with potential and it was a pleasure to hear about the hopes and dreams now within their grasp.”
“Their hard work and determination has paid off – I’m so proud and wish them all the best of luck.”
Students at Islington’s Sixth Form Consortium, which comprises Central Boys Foundation School, Highbury Grange, Highbury Fields and St Aloysius College, achieved a 100 percent pass rate in English this year for the first time.
However, while 96.5pc of exams were awarded a passing grade, the figure falls slightly below the national average of 98.1pc.
Students will now head off to a range of universities from all around the country, including Russell Group universities Cambridge, Warwick and Southampton.
Leader of the council Richard Watts was also full of praise for the students:
“I wish them all the very best of luck for their next step, whether it’s higher education, training or employment,” he said.
