Some of Islington’s most fascinating buildings are open to the public for free tours this weekend.
It is part of the annual Open House event, which celebrates London’s architecture.
In all, there are 33 sites available for touring on Saturday and Sunday – and not all of them are necessarily relics of Islington’s past.
For example, one of the tours is at the Crossrail construction site at Farringdon station, ahead of its opening next year.
On the opposite end of the historical scale is Charterhouse, a few minutes’ walk away from the station. Described as the “Hogwarts of Clerkenwell”, it was built 660 years ago and only opened to the public for the first time in February.
In the north of the borough, notable tours include Union Chapel, Islington Town Hall, Newington Green Primary School and former W. Plumb Victorian butchers shop in Hornsey Road.
