An Islington pensioner last night died in a blaze at her home.
The woman, thought to be in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene after 20 firefighters tackled the blaze in her flat at Washington Court, Old Royal Free Square, on Liverpool Road.
Firefighters led seven people to safety from the block of flats and five tenants from the surrounding apartments were also treated for smoke inhalation.
Islington, Clerkenwell and Kingsland fire stations tackled the blaze after being called at 6.58pm, with the fire out by 8.19pm.
The cause is still under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and police.
