Islington pensioners celebrated Christmas with a free party after Islington Council scrapped its own end-of-year bash to lay on the event for the second year running.

Around 100 of the borough’s senior citizens were treated to live music, dancing, and a turkey dinner with all the trimmings at Islington Assembly Hall in Upper Street on Friday.

The £1,000 cost of the party was met by the council with funds saved from cancelling its annual reception for staff and partners. Clerkenwell-based communications company Momentum London sponsored the event.

Mayor Phil Kelly said: “The party went brilliantly, everyone enjoyed themselves. It’s great to give people who deserve it a bit of a treat at Christmas.”
