Islington pensioners celebrated Christmas with a free party after Islington Council scrapped its own end-of-year bash to lay on the event for the second year running.

Around 100 of the borough’s senior citizens were treated to live music, dancing, and a turkey dinner with all the trimmings at Islington Assembly Hall in Upper Street on Friday.

The 1,000 cost of the party was met by the council with funds saved from cancelling its annual reception for staff and partners. Clerkenwell-based communications company Momentum London sponsored the event.

Mayor Phil Kelly said: “The party went brilliantly, everyone enjoyed themselves. It’s great to give people who deserve it a bit of a treat at Christmas.”
