Generous Islington residents splashed their hard earned cash to buy more than 230 gifts for children who might not otherwise get a present this Christmas.

The initiative, launched by Islington Police at the start of the month, saw Christmas trees spring up in locations across the borough covered with gift tags.

Members of the public could take a tag, follow the instructions on it, and be allocated a vulnerable child, from a care home or disadvantaged family, to but a present for.

Sgt Alistair Mills, who is managing the project, said: “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the response and the public support. The people of Islington have been so generous.

“Now the presents will be X-rayed for safety and, if necessary, wrapped by my team of police elves.

“It’s been such a rewarding experience.”
