Islington has its first “word garden”, where the benches are covered in poetry and the plants are designed for people with sensory impairments to enjoy.
The oasis in King Square Gardens opened yesterday as part of this month’s Word2018 Festival celebrating the power of reading.
Designed by older people at St Luke’s Centre, working with All Change, the garden is inspired by memories and stories of the park and area.
It is part of the Bunhill Ward Improvement Plan paid for by 106 funding and Arts Council of England funding.
The garden was officially launched by locals with Islington mayor, Cllr Dave Poyser and Cllr Claudia Webbe, who helped make the project happen.
Business chief Cllr Asima Shaikh said: “A huge thanks to our partners at St Luke’s Community Centre and All Change who made this happen. I invite all our residents to visit.”
