Islington-born songstress Leona Lewis has been named as a headline act for the BBC’s One Big Weekend event in London next summer.

The mini-festival, which has been billed as an Olympic curtain raiser, will take place in Hackney Marshes on June 23 and 24 next year, just seven days before the 2012 games.

Ms Lewis, who attended Ambler Primary School, in Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park, said: “To be a part of this event is so important to me. Radio 1 are going to put on the biggest show in their history and it’s happening in east London.”

More than 100,000 tickets will be released for the event, with 80 acts performing over six stages.

Rapper turned soul singer Plan B is the only other artist confirmed so far.
