The likely route of the Olympic torch through Islington has been revealed this week.

The flame comes to the borough on the morning of July 26 and is expected to pass Highbury Corner and Upper Street, but not Highbury Fields, according to a leaked council document.

Although the exact route is shrouded in secrecy, the torch enters Islington from Camden on Wharfdale Road and leaves the borough via the City. The anticipated route is up Caledonian Road, along Camden Road, then down Holloway Road, west along Upper Street and into the City via either City Road or Goswell Road.

The procession should pass the Town Hall at around 10am. Although Highbury Fields is not part of the course, the torch will travel close by and a gala sports event is planned for Islington’s biggest park.

It will start when the flame is roughly half way down Upper Street, and will feature 19 Olympic and paralympic sports, as well as stalls and a marquee. In the build up to the event, Highbury Fields will get a host of new sporting facilities, including an astrotruf pitch, netball courts and new fencing round the tennis courts.

Cllr Catherine West, leader of Islington Council said: “We’re delighted the Olympic Torch Route is coming through Islington and our residents will have the chance to see it.

“The Olympics represents a huge opportunity and there’ll be lots going on in Islington from the Torch Sports Day on Highbury Fields to our free ticket giveaway for community heroes.”

Cllr Terry Stacy, leader of Islington Council’s opposition Lib Dem group said: “It is exciting to welcome Olympic torch to Islington, but I hope the borough will have detailed talks with then businesses and communities along the route to minimise any disruption to their lives.”
