Rajveen and Harleen Takhar have launched an online child and babywear store from the front room of one of their homes – and have promised 10 per cent of profits to help deprived youngsters in India.

Harleen, 29, of Drayton Park, Holloway and Rajveen, 26, of Camden Passage, Islington set up Little Putar after seeing a gap in the market for members of the Punjabi community.

The website sells clothing for babies and tots aged up to 6 with slogans such as ‘Little Singh’ and ‘My First Diwali’ on it and in turn 10 per cent of the profits go to the Joy Home For Children charity which looks after orphans in Hyderabad.

Rajveen said: “We are British but we are very proud of our cultural heritage and we thought this would be a good way of identifying with that.

“For us, we wanted to do something that would benefit charity too and we both remembered going to India when we were younger and seeing lots of orphanages.

“We didn’t feel there was much recognition of the work they do and then we came across Joy Home For Children and saw the great work they do and felt we could help.”

The sisters have sourced all the clothing and have printing done in the UK in a bid to do their part for the economy and hope to increase donations to charity once the business takes off.

Rajveen said: “The good thing about the Joy Home For Children is that there is a ledger where you can see where the money is going so we will be able to keep our customers informed about how they are helping.”
