Two sisters who set up an online clothing business together have been nominated for a prestigious industry award.

Rajveen, 27, and Harleen, 30, Takhar founded their child and babywear store, Little Putar, in the front room of their home in Ashburton Triangle, off Drayton Park, Highbury, a year ago and are now up for the Online Business of the Year Award at the English Asian Business Awards.

They will now head up to Manchester at the end of the month to a glitzy awards ceremony sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group hoping to bag their first gong.

“We felt extremely humbled by the nomination, especially given we are approaching our first anniversary this year,” said Rajveen.

“The thing that made it even more special was that it was our customers and the general public who voted for us.”

The pair began their enterprise when they spotted a gap in the market for clothing aimed at the British Asian market and they source all of their stock from suppliers in the UK.

Rajveen said: “The brand is not just about celebrating the Punjabi language and humour, but also about providing children and families with the practical means of learning it.

“Helping to teach kids their mother tongue is at the forefront of our agenda.”

However it’s not all about the culture and business for Rajveen and Harleen.

An orphanage in India, the Joy Home for Children, also benefits from their success as the sisters have promised 10 per cent of their annual profits to help the deprived youngsters.

Rajveen said: “The good thing about the Joy Home For Children is that there is a ledger where you can see where the money is going so we will be able to keep our customers informed about how they are helping.”
