The “wonderful” Barnsbury Community Garden Project unveiled new green spaces and the “smallest library in London” last Friday.

The project in Jays Street, on the Barnsbury Estate, is backed by the Newlon Housing Trust and has been running since 2014.

But last Friday was an opportunity to showcase the new community spaces, as well as celebrating the efforts of the Islington Bangladesh Association (IBA), who run the garden.

Graham Watts, community services manager at the centre, told the Gazette: “It was a really successful and positive event which focused on healthy food gardening and wellbeing.”

He thanked the IBA and other volunteers for all their hard work in creating “a nice little oasis within Barnsbury”.

Labour leader and Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn also attended the event, where he was due to plant a commemorative tree in the garden.

Mr Corbyn told the Gazette: “They have a wonderful gardening project that has given the families and children the chance to grow their own vegetables.

“They gave me a beautiful basket from the garden which we have been eating in salads and omelettes since.”

He added: “It was a really lovely event and I am so grateful for everything.”
