Read Arsenal reporter Layth Yousif’s latest column in the aftermath of Unai Emery’s Emirates debut which resulted in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, as he says: Keep Calm and Carry On

Keep Calm and Carry on.

That’s the advice that Unai Emery’s trusted confidants in his inner circle should be telling the new Arsenal head coach after his Emirates debut on Sunday ended in defeat – as well as a suggestion for the more hysterical section of pundits and fans.

Emery’s new look Gunners lost 2-0 to Pep Guardiola’s champions after an impressive performance by Manchester City at the weekend.

As much as the Premier League is scrutinised – across the globe as much as North London – the levels of overreaction have been high.

The former PSG boss is clearly trying to impose an intensive high-press on his side which also means playing out from the back.

In the first match of his reign it was clear imposing the tactic on his new charges is still very much a work in progress.

There were certainly positives to take from the match even if the visitors were superior over the course of the 90 minutes.

To read so much criticism from those who should know better – as well as those who know no better – well, my response, to coin a phrase used by Silent Stan Kroenke on a certain internet broadcaster this week: ‘Cease and Desist’.

How on earth can fans – the majority of who wanted change – now unleash a storm of criticism aimed at the new boss.

I’m a big fan of social media but before it was invented the time was you’d go down the pub after a match for a post-mortem, with the more hyperbolic utterings long-forgotten afte a few beers.

However, nowadays it seems platforms like Twitter are the place for more frenzied negative reactions in an echo chamber that allows little space for reasoned debate and opinion.

Perpective is needed, for how many hailing Guardiola’s side – who, let’s face it, were excellent – recall thrashing’s at places like Everton during the Catalan’s difficult first season.

I remember being at post-match press conference held by the City boss after Arsenal beat the Etihad outfir 2-1 at Wembley in April 2017, and such was his shock at losing, he was reduced to using platitiudes and truism’s such as ‘the team who scores more goals, wins.’

For someone like myself, who respects Guardiola’s unstinting pursuit of footballing excellence while never abandoning his principles, to see him reduced to such inarticulacy after a damaging defeat was shocking.

No-one remembers that now, though.

It would take a fool not to see what Emery is trying to do. Arsene Wenger was given 12 years after the move from the Emirates.

Emery needs more than one match.

Which is why everyone criticising Emery needs to take a chill pill, or in famed phrase: Keep Calm and Carry On.
