Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party was backed by 72 per cent of constituency party members at a packed meeting last night.
Out of 370 people, 266 members voted for Islington North MP Mr Corbyn, whose leadership is being challenged by Owen Smith. Mr Smith received 100 votes, while there were four abstentions at the meeting in St Mellitus Church Hall, Tollington Park.
Franc David, Islington North Constituency Labour Party press officer, said only 230 members were able to fit into the hall to vote. The rest still voted outside.
In a picture with supporters, Mr Corbyn tweeted after the meeting: “Proud to be nominated by my own CLP with a turnout of 370. Looking forward to working with them all in years ahead.”
It comes after two-thirds of his neighbouring Islington South and Finsbury Constituency Labour Party (CLP) also backed him to remain as leader last week.
The election results will be announced on September 24.
