The town hall’s community chief stepped down yesterday in a mystery resignation.
Cllr Rakhia Ismail, Islington Council’s executive member for community development, left the post after just over 18 months.
Cllr Richard Watts, Leader of Islington Council said: “I’d like to thank Rakhia for her hard work over the last 20 months on the Council’s Executive.
“In her current role she has started the important work of helping the borough’s voluntary sector to survive the Tory-led Government’s cuts.
She has also played an important role in championing local social enterprise, particularly those run by BAME women, a role I hope she will continue from the backbenches.”
The reason for Cllr Ismail’s resignation was unclear, and she had not responded to the Gazette’s request for a comment at the time of publication.
She became a Holloway ward councillor in May 2012, after a thumping by-election win which saw her get 57 per cent of votes.
The Holloway seat has become vacant after incumbent Lucy Rigby stepped down to try and become MP for Lincoln.
Then in April 2013 she was appointed lead member for sustainability during an executive re-shuffle, before being handed the community brief after the election in May.
