The boundaries of the two parliamentary constituencies in Islington could be changed if proposals are approved.
Recommendations from the Boundary Commission include bringing Holloway into the Islington North constituency, currently held by Jeremy Corbyn, and incorporating Holborn, Covent Garden, King’s Cross, as well as the City of London, into the Islington South and Finsbury seat, held by Emily Thornberry.
The Islington South and Finsbury seat would then be renamed The City of London and Islington South.
The report said: “Although the City of London has had a longstanding constituency link with wards from the City of Westminster, we noted that there are also close communication links between the City of London and the south of the Borough of Islington.”
The proposals form part of plans to reduce the number of constituencies in England from 533 to 502 and to ensure that each has a similar number of registered electors.
A consultation on the recommendations is now underway and will close in December.
