Islington’s transport and environment chief Claudia Webbe will find out tomorrow whether she has been chosen as Labour’s candidate in the Lewisham East by-election.

Cllr Webbe is currently third favourite with Ladbrokes at 7/2, behind favourite Sakina Sheikh and Janet Daby.

Labour members in the south London constituency, which was unexpectedly vacated by Heidi Alexander earlier this month, are expected to vote on a final candidate for the June 14 by-election tomorrow.

It is considered a safe Labour seat given Ms Alexander’s 21,123 majority in 2017 and Cllr Webbe has said she would step down from the cabinet should she be named candidate.

Speaking to the Gazette last week, Cllr Webbe pointed to her past work as reasons she should be given the chance to sit in the Commons.

She mentioned her work as a founder member of Operation Trident – which worked across London to improve conviction rates for gun-related homicides within black communities – and running youth charity The Downside Settlement in Bermondsey between 2008 and 2014, which also worked with kids across the border in Lewisham.
