Islington Council leaders last night agreed a limit to the number of takeaways, betting shops and payday loan shops that can be opened in the borough.

The authority had identified Seven Sisters Road, Blackstock Road, Holloway Road, Hornsey Road, Caledonian Road and Junction Road as “areas of concern” for the high number of takeaways.

Meanwhile, Nag’s Head town centre in Holloway Road had also been identified as a concern for betting and payday loan shops.

At 7.30pm last night (Thursday), the council executive met in the town hall and passed housing leader Cllr James Murray’s supplementary planning document (SPD).

This will be used in council planning meetings to consider issues such as “over-concentration”.

Council documents for last night’s meeting said: “Development of the SPD was prompted by the growing concern that certain uses – hot food takeaways, betting shops and payday loan shops – have adverse impacts, particularly where they are located near to sensitive facilities and/or are over-concentrated in a particular area.

“In Islington, there are significant concentrations of some of these uses relative to other local authorities. This is therefore a matter of concern given the wider challenges that the borough faces in terms of poverty and health inequality.”
