Cyclists will lobby Islington Council to remove the “majority of traffic” from a major new cycle route between Finsbury Park and Clerkenwell.

The council has received cash from Transport for London (TfL) to build the Quietway 10 route. It starts in Haringey and would incorporate Ambler Road, Gillespie Road, Drayton Park, Shreingham Road, Westbourne Road, Thornhill Road, Barnsbury Road, Penton Street, Amwell Street, Northampton Road and end near Clerkenwell Green.

Cycle Islington, a vocal lobbying group, wants the town hall to go further and ban traffic on the route – apart from for local access. It has proposed a six-month trial.

It reasoned: “It will create a truly ‘Quiet’ route north to south through Islington. Everyone from school children to pensioners will be able to walk, scoot, and cycle here in comfort and safety.”

Because Cycle Islington’s petition gained over 2,000 signatures, the matter must be debated at a meeting of the full council in the town hall on Thursday next week (7.30pm).

It will be led by Islington transport leader Cllr Claudia Webbe.
