Islington Council has been forced to apologise - again - after it leaked more personal data.

A Holloway resident, who did not wish to be named, had asked the council about anti-social behaviour and CCTV around Hilldrop Community Centre.

But an officer forwarded her enquiry, which included contact details, to the centre: another breach of the authority’s data standards.

It was just a month after the council exposed personal information, including criminal records, on its parking appeals site. It was a third major breach in four years.

Though this on a lesser scale, the resident said it exposed a “fundamental” problem in the town hall’s data protection culture.

She said: “I can’t believe it has happened again. The council just doesn’t learn. They think it’s OK to just forward someone’s details.

“To say sorry is just not good enough. Someone needs to be accountable.

“They are clearly not training or supervising their customer service people. I have worked in data protection and it’s a fundamental point that you don’t share people’s information. If they are not grasping that, there’s a big problem.”

Cllr Andy Hull, executive member for finance and performance, said: “Personal information should not have been handled in this way, and we have apologised directly to the individual concerned.

“We take data protection very seriously and have carried out an investigation into this incident.

“We ensure all our staff undergo mandatory data protection training, with regular refreshers.”
