Islington Council has become the first local authority to raise the Rainbow Flag in celebration of LBGT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgender) History Month.
Dispensation was given by Mayor Phil Kelly and council leader Catherine West after the idea was proposed by the council’s staff LGBT Forum. Cllr West said: “In Islington we have set ourselves the ambitious aim of making our borough a fairer and more equal place.
‘‘The LGBT community is a vibrant and vital part our local community.
“I look forward to celebrating the huge contribution the community has made to the life of our borough and our country over the next month.”
It is the sixth year for the month long celebration, which is organised in conjunction with Camden.
There is a full programme of events including workshops, poetry readings and exhibitions, all with the aim of promoting understanding of LGBT history, culture and contribution to society.
The Rainbow Flag will fly for the month next to the Union Flag and the council flag, with the EU flag to be raised again in March.
