Islington Council could see a host of planning applications rejected next week – by its own planning committee.

The authority has applied for 14 illuminated council advertising displays around the borough.

But in documents released ahead of Monday’s town hall meeting, 10 of its proposals have been reccommended for refusal by planning officers.

In each case, they said the displays would either cause harm to the setting of the area or its heritage assets.

For example, the council has applied for a panel in Islington Green on pavement near the Essex Road side.

But the report says: “Islington Green open space provides a significant focal point and is an area of historic and recreational interest at the junction of two main roads – namely Essex Road and Upper Street. The existing open space is surrounded by uninterrupted views through the site.

“The street scape remains largely unaltered with advertisements not featuring prominently in this location.

“The proposed advertisement display panel is considered to be unacceptable with regards to amenity and would have a detrimental impact on the setting of the nearby heritage assets. The proposed sign would add street clutter.”

Other locations in which the council is facing refusal include Canonbury, Clerkenwell and Finsbury.

But the planning officers do approve of four applications – one in Holloway, one in Archway and two in Caledonian Road – which weren’t seen as interfering with the character of their areas.
