Jeremy Corbyn has criticised “disgusting” treatment of the Windrush generation – including a number of his Islington North constituents.

Mr Corbyn, the Labour Party leader, told the Gazette: “People came here, contributed their lives to this country – our health service, our schools, our transport system – are now being told they are no longer welcome. It’s disgraceful and disgusting. The public uprising about Windrush shows the best of Britain.

“There are a number of people [in Islington North] affected by this. They have been talking to me and obviously we are taking up their individual cases.

“They have been badly treated. In one case, she has spent 40 years working in the NHS in various capacities. She’s cured us, cleaned us, helped us, supported us. She deserves our thanks. Not collective abuse where she is deported. We are going to support them.”

The controversy, which continued this week, has seen long-term residents who settled in the UK from the Caribbean between the late ’40s and early ’70s wrongly identified by the government as illegal immigrants after the destruction of vital paperwork.
