Proposals for new constituency boundaries have been slammed by the MP for Islington South and Finsbury, Emily Thornberry.

Recent recommendations from the Boundary Commission include bringing Holloway into the Islington North constituency, currently held by Jeremy Corbyn, and incorporating Holborn, Covent Garden, King’s Cross, as well as the City of London, into the Islington South and Finsbury seat which would be renamed The City of London and Islington South.

‘Very odd’

While Mr Corbyn is relieved at the proposed changes to his seat, his Islington colleague Ms Thornberry has been left very unhappy at the prospect of losing Holloway from her constituency.

She said: “I really don’t want to not represent Holloway anymore. I love Holloway. I have knocked on every door in Holloway and have many great friends there.

“Over the past seven years I’ve represented it to the best of my ability and I want to continue to represent it.

“I will instead be representing City of London and, while I’m used to representing marginalised people if I need to, representing bankers will be strange.

“It will be very odd. I’ll be quite likely to have lunch at a primary school where the majority of students are on free school meals and in the evening I could be eating off a gold plate with bankers. But if that’s what has to be done, I’ll do it.”

Ms Thornberry said the bill for boundary changes was an “appalling piece of gerrymandering” and voiced concerns her constituency may take in three boroughs.

She is also upset that the Finsbury name could be lost, adding: “Finsbury is a great historic name and there have been many amazing MPs representing Finsbury.

“The name would be lost which would be terribly sad.”

Mr Corbyn said: “I’m relieved it doesn’t cross borough boundaries. I look forward to representing Holloway.”

The bill aims to cut constituencies in England from 533 to 502.
