A rowdy cycling campaigner made a mockery of Islington Council’s security staff last night.

At the full council meeting, Anita Frizzarin was banished from the town hall chamber after repeatedly interrupting a speech by Cllr Claudia Webbe (Lab) with loud and sarcastic laughter.

But after being told to leave by mayor Cllr Una O’Halloran, Ms Frizzarin simply refused to budge when urged to do so by three members of the town hall’s security staff.

After a great deal of shouting, including angry members of the public telling her off, the meeting simply commenced as security staff gave up. Cllr Caroline Russell (Green) and fellow cycling activist Roderik Gonggrijp rushed over and appeared to reprimand her.

Cllr Webbe had been defending the council’s cycling policy following a question from Mr Gonggrijp about protected cycle lanes. Since 2014, 190m of segregated lanes have been installed.

She said: “Islington is a pro-cycling borough. We have done a great deal, being the first to implement 20mph limits. We are working hard to improve sensitive junctions.”

It’s not the first time Ms Frizzarin has been banished from a full council meeting for disruptive behaviour.

In June last year, she was told to leave by then mayor Cllr Kat Fletcher. That time, she obeyed. It was at the height of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour leadership crisis after the EU referendum vote. Slowly putting her coat on as she left, Ms Frizzarin said: “I’m taking my time like Jeremy Corbyn.”
