Teacher strike set to shut schools across Islington

Schools across Islington will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) as hundreds of teachers walk out in anger at government changes to pensions.

Twelve primary schools and two secondary schools will be completely shut and many more will only be partially open due to a strike called by the National Union of Teachers (NUT).

The closed primaries are Copenhagen, Duncombe, Hugh Myddleton, Montem, Pakeman, Pooles Park, Prior Weston, St John’s Highbury Vale, St Joseph’s, St Luke’s, Tufnell Park and Yerbury.

The secondaries are Highbury Grove and Holloway, while many others are admitting only certain year groups.

Ken Muller, assistant secretary of the Islington NUT branch, which has 1,400 members, said: “Teachers are extremely angry to be told to work longer for their pensions and be paid less, especially when the chancellor George Osborne is cutting taxes for the rich.”

Picket lines are expected at Mount Carmel Technology College for Girls, in Islington, the Islington Sixth Form Centre, in Islington, and Islington Arts and Media School, in Finsbury Park.

Further details can be found on Islington Council’s website, though parents are advised to contact the schools themselves if in doubt.
