Two pianos have landed in Islington as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

The City of London has placed 50 of the golden instruments around the capital – with one in St Mary’s Church garden, Upper Street, Islington, and one at St Luke’s Church, in Old Street, Finsbury.

Danielle Adam, who works at the National Aids Trust charity in Old Street, said: ‘It’s really nice to see office workers, schoolchildren, policemen and people from the local market listening to, and applauding, people as they play the piano.

“Not only do people sit down to listen at lunchtime, but I saw many stop on their way home from work last Thursday to listen to a fantastic pianist who even started taking requests.”

Her colleague Claire May said: “It is a really lovely idea and makes me wish I could play.”

The pianos, which are free for anyone to play, will be in situ until July 13.

Islington Council is asking residents to vote for one of the Islington locations as their favourite on Twitter with #goldenstreetpianos.
