An ambitious £125million scheme to transform a university site into a “showpiece” campus has been announced.

London Metropolitan University is to bring together all of its faculties onto one location for the first time in its 170-year history.

The university, which has a campus in Holloway Road, Holloway, runs visual arts, architecture, business and law courses in Aldgate and Moorgate, but will begin moving those departments to the new single campus in Holloway from September 2017.

Vice-chancellor Prof John Raftery said: “We are excited about this project, which aims to create a one campus, one community university in Holloway.

“We believe this will benefit our students, who will enjoy an enhanced student experience, and our staff, who will have more opportunities to collaborate.

“The people and businesses of Islington will also see benefits to the local economy.”

The plans, which also include new IT projects, came about from student feedback.

Research carried out between the university and its students’ union saw 65 per cent of students state that they would prefer the university to have just one campus, with responses citing benefits such as a stronger student community and more opportunities to work together.

Running alongside the move, which is set to take several years, will be a curriculum review and significant investment in facilities at Holloway, a spokesman said.

Obie Opara, president of the students’ union, said: “From the research we carried out last year, we know many students would prefer to study on one campus, so we welcome this decision and the long-term benefits it will bring.

“We also know this may cause concerns for some students, particularly those at the Aldgate and Moorgate sites.

“We will continue to work with students across all sites to ensure their voices are central to the development of this plan, ensuring a smooth transition and creating a more sustainable London Met.

“We are excited by the prospect of a one campus, one community university, where all students can interact and learn from one another and have access to the same facilities and the best student experience.”
