Police at the Emirates were forced to intervene after an away fans refused to lower a homemade protest banner before Sunday’s tie between Arsenal and reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Travelling City supporters were protesting against the widely criticised ticket prices for away seats at the stadium in Ashburton Grove, Holloway, holding a bed sheet bearing the words “£62!! WHERE WILL IT STOP?”

A Met spokesman said: “Officers spoke to the supporters, who had refused to take down the banner, and then assisted stewards with its removal. No arrests were made.”

An Arsenal spokesman insisted that the banner was removed for the sole reason that it was obstructing the view of other spectators.

Arsenal have come under fire recently for having the most expensive tickets in the country, with the highest-priced matchday ticket being sold for £126.

While the average price of an away ticket at Arsenal remains under £40, it is a stark contrast to Wigan Athletic’s average of just under £24.

Out of the 3,000 away tickets allocated to Manchester City fans, nearly 1,000 were returned in protest against the £62 cost.
