Marks and Spencer in Holloway Road is one of 14 branches across the country set to close, the firm has revealed.

The chain is shutting 100 stores over the next four years as part of a “vital” restructure, but has also today announced the opening next year of a new M&S Foodhall in Hill House.

All 61 staff members from the Holloway Road branch will be “redeployed” to nearby stores when it closes early next year, the company said.

M&S’s London chief Simon Lucas said: “Deciding to close M&S Holloway Road was a difficult decision and I understand many of our loyal customers will be disappointed by this news.

“We have a wonderful team and I’m pleased they’ll be relocating to nearby stores, including the new Archway Foodhall when it opens in 2019.”

The Holloway store, which was originally based in Seven Sisters Road, first opened its doors in 1914.

Property director Sacha Berendji added: “Closing stores isn’t easy but it is vital for the future of M&S.

“Where we have closed stores, we are seeing an encouraging number of customers moving to nearby stores and enjoying shopping with us in a better environment, which is why we’re continuing to transform our estate with pace.”
