Ahead of Arsenal playing Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday it’s been a terrible week for Gunners fans everywhere – but the Islington Gazette has managed to track down the only happy little supporter this week.

Six-year-old Albie Best is mad about everything to do with Arsenal.

You can imagine his delight when his dad, George, told his bright-eyed son he had got them tickets to the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley last Sunday.

So you can also imagine his utter heartbreak – along with 32,000 fellow fans in the ground and millions more around the globe – after City’s convincing 3-0 victory over Arsene Wenger’s sorry Gunners in the showpiece final.

Albie was on the verge of tears, but the brave trooper he is he insisted to his father that he wanted to stay to see the trophy being lifted by Pep Guardiola’s men.

Dad George takes up the story: “It was the first cup final he’d been to and was excited by it all despite being very disappointed and upset Arsenal hadn’t won the trophy.

“He wanted to stay to soak up the experience of being there at Wembley and being close to the players.”

“All the Arsenal fans around us had left and as City went up to collect their trophy Albie noticed all our players had already received their runners-up medals and were now standing on the pitch.”

George and Albie spotted their chance and went down to the front row of seating in their block and shouted at the top of their voices the name of Albie’s favourite player, Mesut Ozil.

The talented German, who like the rest of his team-mates had a bad day at the office, walked over to the young lad and his dad and handed over the match-shirt he had been wearing.

George explained: “We shouted Ozil’s name at the top of our voices until he looked round at us both.

“I then said: ‘Mesut can my son please have your shirt. He looked at my son and nodded his head and said: ‘Yes of course’.

“He then walked over to us, took his shirt off and gave it to the steward in front and told the steward to give it to my son.

“It made a sad day into a fantastic day. Albie was beaming ear to ear. He was ecstatic.”

Proud dad George is now in the process of framing the shirt to put on his son’s wall as an unexpected memento of a bad day which, at least, ended up with one excited six-year-old Arsenal fan going to bed with a smile on his face.
