Drag queens, Baywatch babes, sexy nurses, maids and even a flamingo turned out in force for the Great Drag Race on Saturday.

More than 180 men, all dressed in their finest feminine accoutrements, came to Highbury Fields for the 10.2km fun run in aid of Prostate Action.

Gazette reporter Jon Dean got in on the act, posting a time of 49 minutes, and raised almost 200 for Cancer Research alongside fellow scribe Tim Lamden from our sister titles in the North London Journal series.

Before the race, make-up artists were on hand to help the chaps look fabulous while the DJ played a suitable soundtrack including Eurythmic’s Who’s That Girl, Dude (Looks Like a Lady) by Aerosmith and Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash.

Then 156 men, all dressed as women, teamed up to smash the Guinness world record for the longest line of dancing drag queens – obliterating the previous record of 128 that was set at last year’s event.

Winner of the race itself was James Mummery, who came first with an impressive time of 38 minutes.

After the race, competitors enjoyed a well-earned beer in the sun with live music and complementary sports massages from Islington’s Tatami Health.

Jacob Morris, 23, from Surrey, said: “My dad told me about it and I thought it looked a good idea – it was good fun and the sun was shining. I would definitely do it again.

“My dad looked horrific in his pink tutu though, I wouldn’t want to see that again.”

Gareth Ellis-Thomas, head of communications at Prostate Action, said of the event: “It was a great success and we are tickled pink that so many men dressed up to drag prostate cancer into the spotlight.”

Donations are still being counted, but the charity is confident of beating last year’s total of 20,000.
