Islington MEP Sarah Ludford last week dropped in on social enterprise GetMoreBikes to see their apprentice mechanics in action.

Hailing the social enterprise’s aim to train 100 apprentices – half of them women – over the next three years, the member of European parliament, one of eight for Islington, branded the start-up in Airdrie Close an “inspiration”.

“The apprentices at GetMoreBikes are getting the chance to learn the skills they need to become qualified mechanics and their commitment was a pleasure to see...and I applaud their commitment to have women as half of those.

“Liberal Democrats want to double to 200,000 nationally the number of companies taking on apprentices so that more young people can get a great start to their working life.

“That’s why we’re delighted to have secured a grant scheme for small firms worth £1,500 for each new apprentice.”

Steve Connelly, co-founder of GetMoreBikes, said: “Through apprenticeships, we are creating local employment opportunities and training young people to fulfill a growing need in their community.

“More frequent and safer cycling in London benefits the health and well-being of the community, reduces pressure on the overloaded transport system, and is better for the environment.”
