Visit to training centre in honour of National Apprentice Week

A young apprentice was the star of the show as MP Emily Thonrberry headed to a King’s Cross building site.

As part of National Apprentice Week, the member for Islington South and Finsbury visited the Carillion training centre in York Way.

During the trip on March 12 she met 80 youngsters - 36 of whom are from her constituency - who were learning the building trade

After touring the site, Ms Thornberry handed an Apprentice of the Year gong to 17-year-old Dean Riley, who lives on York Way and has been in training for 7 months.

The young man was recognised for his “dedication and enthusiasm in every aspect of his course work and while on placement.”

She said: “I was really pleased to meet these youngsters and see first hand how their apprenticeships have helped develop their skills and confidence.

“With youth unemployment in Islington remaining higher than the London and nationwide averages, young people in my constituency need to know that there’s a route for them to establish themselves on their chosen career path without the need for an expensive university education,” she added.
